Cayman Islands Introduces Data Protection Law

13 Aug 2019

Cayman Islands will soon introduce a law to protect individuals' personal data.

The Data Protection Law, 2017 (the "DPL") is currently due to come into force on 30 September 2019.

In summary, any entity established in the Cayman Islands that handles any individual's personal information has certain obligations with respect to that information.  These include ensuring that any such individual is formally apprised of what any of their personal data is being used for, and by whom.  The entity is also responsible for personal information processed on its behalf by a third party processor and for such purposes is obliged to have a written contract with relevant service providers.

We have prepared a guide to the DPL which is available on request from our Legal Guides platform.

Further Information

If you would like to discuss the application of the DPL to your particular Cayman Islands structure, please contact one of the lawyers below or your usual Maples Group contact.
