Maples Advises Cayman Islands Government on First Public-Private Partnership
29 Apr 2021
Maples and Calder, the Maples Group's law firm was pleased to advise the Cayman Islands Government ("CIG") on a new 25 year Public Private Partnership ("PPP") waste management contract.
The PPP project, named ReGen, Cayman’s Energy and Recycling Centre, is set to transform waste management for the Cayman Islands, with the new energy recovery and recycling facilities diverting up to 95 per cent of waste from being landfilled and contributing 8.5 megawatts of renewable energy to the grid.
A consortium led by Dart Enterprises will design, build, finance, operate and maintain a new integrated solid waste management system. The project, which will create approximately 300 jobs and up to 60 long term positions, will also involve the closing, capping and remediation of the existing landfill site in George Town.
Leading the transaction from the Maples Group's Cayman Islands practice was Partner, Abraham Thoppil who has extensive experience advising in local Cayman Islands business matters with assistance from Associates, Sophia Scott and Adrian Davey.
Commenting on the project, Abraham said, "It was a pleasure to advise the Cayman Islands Government on this critical project that will truly enhance and benefit the local community here in Cayman."
